Aluminium 2017 channels comprise mainly 3.5–4.5% copper, 0.4–0.8% magnesium, 0.6–1.0% manganese, and minute traces of silicon and iron. The alloy gives a tensile strength of 430–510 MPa and a yield strength of 280–400 MPa upon heat treatment. The corrosion resistance is moderate but can be improved by surface coatings or anodizing. Al 2017 has very good machinability and average weldability. It retains good mechanical properties in arduous applications with calls for strength, stiffness, and accurate dimensional tolerance under dynamic loads or machining processes.
