Aluminium 2024 has copper (3.8–4.9%), magnesium (1.2–1.8%), manganese (0.3–0.9%), and trace amounts of iron, silicon, and zinc. In T3 temper, it provides tensile strength of 430–490 MPa, yield strength of approximately 280–330 MPa, and Brinell hardness of 120–140 HB. The alloy possesses high fatigue resistance as well as good machinability but reduced corrosion resistance, needing protective coatings under severe environments. It is heat-treatable and can have mechanical properties optimized for certain uses, particularly where high strength is a requirement.
